Friendly Candle is a candle company, but more importantly, we are two best friends working towards a greener Earth. With a mission to improve the world around them, we create 100% all-natural soy candles. Every part of the Candle is designed to be environmentally friendly, down to the plant-able seed paper tag. And with scents ranging from calming lavender to citrusy Satsuma, every candle lover is sure to find something they love.
When/how did you get started in this business? What was your inspiration?:
With a passion for art and positivity in the world around us, the idea of creating our own thing seemed to be a conversation we had a lot. Finally one day, we stopped talking and started doing. We started making eco-friendly snowboard and skateboard wax. With an abundance of wax around, we started tinkering with making candles for ourselves. Our friends and family took notice, and began requesting candles for themselves and as gifts for others. With a higher demand for our candles, we switched our focus. We wanted to still incorporate the eco-conscious values we held and sought out to make a product where nearly every part is recycled and/or gives back.
What is the most rewarding part of owning your own business?
We will never forget our first sale at a market. It was a tremendous feeling. A complete stranger truly loved what we were about, the product we made, and wanted to give us money for it. We made someone happy, which made us happy. That is one of the many rewards of owning your own business. You are in control and have the freedom to work as hard as you want to achieve your goals. We take great pride in what we do and the candles we make. We are constantly learning and improving upon what we build.
What makes your product different than the rest?
Our candles are different from the name brand candles because we use 100% all-natural soy wax, which burns clean, and cotton woven wicks. Name brand candles use paraffin wax. In a study by researchers at South Carolina University, they found that paraffin-based candles — the most popular kind — emitted toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene while soy candles did not. The same study found that frequently lighting many paraffin candles in an un-ventilated space could lead to problems, and may aggravate asthma, cause allergy-like symptoms, or irritate the respiratory tract.
Name brand candles also use lead based wicks (a wick with a skinny metal rod in the center for support). Burning these produce very detrimental emissions. Lead poisoning can lead to behavior changes and damage internal organs, especially the kidneys. Our candles use no metal filaments in our wicks.
When you’re not making fabulous candles…what do you like to do in all that spare time you have?
We actually are best friends and have been for some time, so when we’re not making/selling candles, we are hanging out with each other. We both enjoy being outside. We like to hike, kayak, travel, and a few years ago both went skydiving together.
